The price of alcoholic beverages is ridiculously high in Fiji. I suspect there’s a sin tax on top of import taxes.
For example, a big bottle of cheap rum in the U.S. that would cost about $20 could cost about $100 here.
We found the best prices at the duty-free shop at the airport. When we first arrived, we bought a bottle of local rum there. It is definitely not a sipping rum. It’s harsh on the nose and the palate. It’s best for mixing.
I came up with my own concoction, adding 1 tsp. of honey and the juice from 2 lime wedges to the rum. You can add more or less of these ingredients to taste.
The sweet from the honey and the tart from the lime take the hard edge off the drink.
Drop an ice cube in, and you’re ready to sip.
