Newport, Oregon was one of our stops during our road trip up Highway 101. It’s a cute oceanside town with fickle weather. It can be beautiful one day and brooding the next.
The day we arrived, the sky was clear, and the sun highlighted the dramatic cliffs and rolling waves of the dark green-blue Pacific.
We stayed at the Best Western Plus Agate Beach Inn. We arrived right at the end of happy hour, and the lady serving complimentary local wines in the lobby was kind to let us have a couple glasses before she packed up for the evening.
The property has been renovated recently and looks brand new. The design is sleek and modern, and there are large windows by the elevator banks overlooking the beach.
I recommend getting an oceanfront room. It felt like we had a temporary home by the water during our stay. Our room came with two comfortable lounge chairs and a bistro table. The atmosphere was so inviting, we happily ordered room service our first night so we could relax and watch the sunset.
In June, the sun doesn’t set until around 9 p.m., so there is plenty of time to enjoy the daylight hours.
In the morning, it’s pleasant to watch the locals look for razor clams on the beach.
The day after we arrived, the weather turned. It was a moody, gray day, but we made the most of it by walking a few kilometers along the shore. It can be chilly, so I recommend wearing layers. You can warm up with a coffee in town.
The hotel serves good food (I recommend the chowder and fish and chips) and offers thoughtful touches such as blankets by the back door to borrow for the beach.
The view of the rolling waves is mesmerizing.
