Guy Fieri alert: Newport Cafe should be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives!
This roadside joint has an adorable crab cartoon logo and beckons from the road with breakfast all day, lots of seafood and 24/7 hours. It’s home to an 8-lb. burger–yes, you read that right. Eight pounds of burger. We decided not to take up that challenge. I can pack away a lot, but even that’s too much for me.
The down-home cooking is generous and satisfying, and the atmosphere is casual and comfortable. There are large TVs inside, so we were able to catch a bit of the NBA playoffs.
We ordered chowder for a starter and fried razor clams and oysters for mains. The chowder was rich and hearty. They let us substitute a fresh crab salad for fries with the razor clams. The local oysters are from Yaquina (pronounced Yah-KEHN-na) Bay. I also ordered a spinach salad to get in my greens. We ended up with so many fries that we took a box for the road.
Newport Cafe is family owned. When we went to pay, the young man at the register asked if we had had enough to eat. I thought that was great–he wanted to make sure we didn’t walk away still hungry.
