We ventured outside of Suva for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began. We are very fortunate that COVID-19 seems to be under control here in Fiji, and it’s safe to travel within the country again.
We chose Fiji Beachouse for a Memorial Day weekend getaway because it’s one of the handful of hotels that allow dogs (we have two).
The resort was packed, and we ended up in one of the bare-bones rooms. I’m not gonna lie: I was not happy with it. The room was dark and too basic: just a hard bed and a bench. There was no shampoo or lotion for the ladies, and there was no housekeeping. But at least the room had a private bathroom, so I could deal for two nights.
Although I disliked the room, I can’t really argue with anything because the resort is geared toward backpackers, and it does execute the backpacker vibe well. It’s off the beaten path, casual, minimalist and features plenty of common spaces and outdoor seating. Very much a place millennials would love.
There’s a decent beach, where you can get on the water with the resort’s kayaks and standup paddleboards. You can also snorkel around the seagrasses and small coral heads.
If you are at the resort during a popular time, be prepared to wait for your food. It took an hour for our lunch to arrive one day, so I suggest bringing your own drinks and snacks.
Beachouse has a stylish cafe and boutique at the entrance of the resort that sells goods from local businesses. There is also a local brewery behind the cafe. I recommend picking up whole-bean Sigatoka Coffee to take home. It makes for a nice French press brew.
