We explored the RoC Market this past Sunday. The market is a popular event held in downtown Suva every third Sunday of the month. It features local small businesses selling artisinal goods, plants and food.
One of the booths we stopped at belonged to Fijian artist Alifereti Malai. We were struck by his beautiful artworks showcasing cultural themes. The art on display was predominantly black-ink based with fine lines and dense details. The look is high on contrast, making it really stand out.
We bought his drawing of an indigenous war club to complement the club we already have at home. The art includes a hand-written explanation of its significance in Fijian culture. It’s drawn on tapa, a cloth made of local bark.
